How therapy helps you feel better

Mental health therapy can look different for everyone, and that’s a good thing. Whether you’re looking for a space to process trauma, manage anxiety, or improve relationships, therapy can help you understand yourself more deeply and develop healthy tools for lasting change.

The 2022 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) found that out of the 59.3 million adults living with mental health issues that year, 30 million—around 50.6%—received mental health treatment, with therapy being one of the most common services used.1 That’s because therapy works—it helps people feel more in control, more connected, and more hopeful.

Going to therapy can help you feel better in the long run by addressing underlying issues and providing coping mechanisms for dealing with difficult emotions or events. It also provides a safe and nonjudgmental space to express yourself and receive support from a trained professional. This can be especially helpful for those who may not have a strong support system in their personal lives.

When should you seek therapy?

Recognizing when to seek therapy can be an important step toward improving your overall well-being. Therapy may be beneficial if you are experiencing persistent feelings of sadness, anxiety, or overwhelm that interfere with daily life. It can also help if you notice changes in your sleep patterns, appetite, or energy levels, or if you feel stuck in a cycle of negative thoughts. Life events such as the loss of a loved one, the end of a relationship, or major transitions like a career change or relocation may also create a need for additional support.

Additionally, therapy can provide guidance if you are struggling to manage stress, cope with trauma, or address challenges in your relationships. Remember, seeking therapy is not only for times of crisis—it can also be a proactive way to build resilience, learn new strategies for self-care, and maintain emotional health.

Types of therapy offered by Northeast Health Services

Northeast Health Services doesn’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. Our therapists use a variety of evidence-based methods, including:

  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT): Helps you identify unhelpful thought patterns and change them
  • Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT): Supports emotional regulation and distress tolerance
  • Psychodynamic therapy: Explores past experiences and how they shape current behavior
  • Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT): A type of CBT that focuses on mindfulness and acceptance of difficult thoughts and emotions while committing to valued actions
  • Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT): A time-limited therapy that improves interpersonal relationships and communication patterns
  • Internal family systems (IFS): A non-pathologizing approach that looks at how different parts of a person’s personality interact with each other
  • Eclectic therapy: Combines techniques from multiple therapeutic approaches to tailor treatment to the individual needs of the client
  • Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT): Integrates mindfulness practices with cognitive therapy techniques to help individuals manage their thoughts and emotions
  • Exposure and response prevention (ERP) therapy: Involves gradually exposing the individual to their fears or triggers in a safe and controlled environment, helping them learn how to cope with and eventually overcome these concerns
  • Play therapy: Utilizes play and creative activities to help children express their thoughts and emotions, particularly useful for those who may have difficulty verbalizing their feelings
  • Art therapy: Similar to play therapy, but utilizes art and creative expression as a means of communication and self-discovery
  • Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy: Uses eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation to help individuals process traumatic memories and reduce distress associated with them
  • Behavioral activation therapy: Focuses on encouraging individuals to engage in positive behaviors and activities that bring them joy, in order to combat symptoms of depression or anxiety

These are just a few of the ways we can help. We aim to meet you wherever you are in your journey and provide the support you need. We’re proud to be part of local communities across Massachusetts, offering various counseling services. Our caring professionals are here to listen, make you feel safe, and help you feel empowered every step of the way.

Individual therapy

Individual therapy offers a confidential space where you can talk openly with a trained therapist. This one-on-one setting allows you to work through concerns such as:

  • Depression, anxiety, or trauma
  • Relationship stress or family dynamics
  • Major life changes, such as divorce or job loss
  • Grief and loss

You’ll collaborate with your therapist to set goals, develop strategies, and build on your strengths at your own pace. Some clients find clarity in just a few sessions; others continue long-term as their needs evolve. Either way, our approach is built around treatment on your terms.

Couples therapy

Couples therapy is a type of psychotherapy that focuses on improving communication and resolving conflicts within romantic relationships. This can include married couples, unmarried couples, same-sex couples, or any two partners who are seeking to improve their relationship. It can be beneficial for couples who are experiencing difficulties in their relationship, as well as those who simply want to strengthen their bond.

In couples therapy, both partners participate in the sessions together with a trained therapist. They work together to identify and address issues such as communication problems, trust issues, financial disagreements, and sexual intimacy concerns. The goal of this type of therapy is to help both partners understand each other’s perspectives and find healthier ways to communicate and connect.

Family therapy

Family therapy, also known as family counseling, is a form of psychotherapy that focuses on improving communication and resolving conflicts within the family unit. It involves working with all family members to address issues such as strained relationships, divorce or separation, blended families, parenting concerns, and mental health challenges.

In family therapy sessions, a therapist helps each member of the family express their thoughts and feelings in a safe and supportive environment. They also facilitate discussions to identify patterns of behavior that may be causing conflict within the family. By understanding these dynamics, families can learn new ways to communicate effectively and foster healthier relationships.

Family therapy can be especially beneficial for children and teenagers who may be struggling with behavioral or emotional issues. By involving the entire family, the therapist can address any underlying issues that may be contributing to the child’s struggles and work towards finding solutions together.

In addition to addressing conflict, family therapy can also help families navigate major life transitions such as divorce, loss of a loved one, or adjusting to a new family dynamic. A therapist can provide guidance and support during these challenging times, helping families maintain strong bonds and adapt to change.

Group therapy

Group therapy gives you the chance to connect with others who understand what you’re going through. Led by an experienced therapist, our groups provide a supportive space to share, listen, and learn together.

Group therapy options vary across our clinics in Massachusetts, but our intake team is here to help. We’ll work with you to identify the offerings available in your area that best suit your needs. Many people find that group therapy helps reduce feelings of isolation while offering fresh perspectives and new coping skills. You’re never forced to share, and your comfort is always our priority.

What therapy looks like (and what it doesn’t)

Many people hesitate to start mental health counseling because they aren’t sure what to expect. They wonder, “Will I have to lie on a couch and talk about my childhood?” or “What if I don’t know what to say?”

Short-term vs long-term therapy

One common concern about therapy is the time commitment. Some people worry that they will have to attend sessions for years on end in order to see any progress. However, this is not always the case. Therapy can be divided into two categories: short-term and long-term. Short-term therapy is well-suited for navigating grief, job loss, life transitions, or other stressful life events. In contrast, long-term therapy is better equipped to address deeper challenges such as trauma, depression, anxiety, and other complex mental health conditions.

Short-term therapy usually lasts anywhere from 8–16 sessions, with weekly or bi-weekly meetings. It typically focuses on a specific issue or problem and helps you develop strategies to deal with it more effectively. This type of therapy can be very effective for those looking for concrete solutions and support for a specific issue.

On the other hand, long-term therapy is often more open-ended and can last several months or even years. The focus of this type of therapy is on gaining a deeper understanding of yourself and your patterns, as well as addressing any underlying issues that may be contributing to your current struggles. This can provide more sustainable and long-lasting changes in your life.

It’s important to understand that there is no right or wrong approach to choosing between short-term and long-term therapy. Both options have benefits and can be effective for different individuals and situations. Northeast Health Services therapists will help you determine the best approach for your case—you don’t have to figure it out alone.

The truth about going to therapy

Here’s the truth: therapy doesn’t follow a script. Some sessions are about exploring your past, others might focus on practical strategies for everyday stress, and some might even involve moments of laughter or silence, and all of it is okay.

Your therapist is there to guide the process, not to judge or “fix” you. You’ll work together as a team to figure out what helps. Therapy might surprise you with how human it feels. You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit from talking with someone who listens.

Thanks to our hybrid approach, therapy can happen in a traditional office or right from your couch at home.
