Ideally, my clients are children and their families. Typically, they come to me with concerns about the child’s mental health needs, reactions to past trauma, difficulty using positive communication, difficulty going to school or exhibiting aggressive verbal and physical behaviors. Most of the children I see have a great deal of difficulty managing their emotions or “big feelings” and their parents need guidance on how to help them at home. While I teach everyone what strategies they can use that will help regulate everyone’s emotions I also focus on the child’s ability to communicate positively, effectively and enhance interpersonal relationships.
Working with children can be very challenging but also the presentation of challenges is different for each client. I treat each client as an individual and rarely use the same approach with one client that I would with another. I specialize in meeting individuals where they are at and helping them to become the best versions of themselves that they can be. I have worked with individuals of all ages, focusing on children ages 4 through 20, and their families if they would like. My ideas are typically based in cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, solution focused therapy and some behavioral techniques. Each client is unique, with an unique set of needs. Therefore my approach is always unique and individualized to the client.
Much of what I do with my client’s has almost nothing to do with textbook approaches, in the literal sense. My first goal is to build a very strong rapport and ensure that my client has a safe person to talk to and work with when something isn’t going well. I also allow myself to be transparent and real with my clients, understanding that when feeling vulnerable no one really wants someone to work with them if they are speaking in jargon and using ideas that very few people understand in the first place. I treat humanity with humility.
