Jodyann Hanson, MFT, BSW

Marriage & Family Therapist

I am a clinician at our Brighton clinic who provides therapy services!

My ideal client is someone navigating a period of transition—an emerging adult trying to understand who they are, a parent balancing caregiving and identity, or someone who has spent years in survival mode and is now ready to do deeper work. Often, they carry the weight of complex trauma, systemic oppression, or generational expectations. They might feel overwhelmed by the “shoulds” of life, unsure how to move forward but equally afraid to stay where they are. What they want is clarity, grounding, and a sense of inner steadiness. More than anything, they want to feel like themselves again—or perhaps, for the first time.
Their needs are both emotional and practical. They may be struggling with anxiety, low self-worth, or fractured relationships. But beneath those symptoms is a longing to feel heard, respected, and supported in building a life that reflects their values. My ideal client wants tools—but not generic advice. They want support that meets them where they are, aligned with how they see the world and what they have access to. They crave something real: a connection that allows them to show up as they are without apology. That desire for authenticity and transformation is where our work begins.

I help individuals and families untangle emotional chaos and build supportive, personalized systems that promote healing. My clinical foundation includes CBT, trauma-informed care, family systems, mindfulness, and play-based interventions. I’ve had experience working with people with intellectual disabilities using behavior management techniques, and I’ve led after-school play therapy programs for K–3rd graders. I have also supported neurodivergent adults through sensory-informed, age-appropriate play to develop core regulation skills.
I offer a space where clients can be their full selves—quirky, quiet, questioning, or just tired. My demeanor is warm and grounded with just enough silliness to make therapy feel human. I love incorporating mindfulness, interactive tools, and creative strategies that adapt to each client’s unique rhythm.
I also work closely with parents, offering skills training and coaching to strengthen parent-child connection and reduce reactivity in the home. Whether it’s through modeling emotion regulation, supporting co-regulation, or simply helping families slow down and reconnect, I guide caregivers in becoming steady, nurturing supports for their children.

I want you to know: therapy with me isn’t about being perfect—it’s about being real. I bring my full, authentic self into this work. I’ve supported children through play, partnered with parents to explore new interaction styles, and helped individuals with learning differences achieve goals they once thought were out of reach.

I approach each session with curiosity, flexibility, and deep respect for your lived experience. As someone deeply connected to African and Caribbean cultures, I carry a strong commitment to cultural humility—honoring the identities, histories, and values of every person who enters the room. I know how powerful—and how rare—it can be to feel truly seen in a therapeutic space, especially if you come from a marginalized or underrepresented background. That’s why I work to create an environment where all cultures are not just acknowledged, but actively respected, validated, and welcomed—not just in words, but in practice.

Whether we’re unpacking intergenerational dynamics, navigating systems that weren’t built for us, or simply trying to pause and breathe, I’m here to help you build tools that make sense for your life. If traditional therapy hasn’t felt like a good fit, I’d love to collaborate with you to create something that does.

I specialize in helping people develop accessible, personalized strategies—whether that means building structure, regulating emotions, or deepening relationships. I use mindfulness not just to “calm down,” but to help you tune in. And yes, sometimes we’ll laugh, fidget with tools, or color while we talk—because therapy can be both serious and joyful.

If life feels chaotic, I’m here to help you manage it in ways that feel empowering and doable. You don’t have to have it all figured out. I’ll meet you exactly where you are—let’s find the way forward together.
