Albina Tumarkin, MHC

Mental Health Counselor

I am a counselor at our Newton clinic who provides therapy services!

My ideal client is someone seeking a safe, nonjudgmental space to share their concerns openly with a trusted professional. They may be experiencing anxiety, burnout, or navigating significant life transitions. Some may be grieving — whether from the loss of a loved one, the end of a relationship, or another deeply personal experience — and are looking for companionship and support in processing that pain. Others may wish to explore sensitive topics, including aspects of their sexuality, but feel hesitant or embarrassed to bring them up elsewhere.
Together, we embark on a journey of exploration, working to uncover not just the visible challenges but also the deeper, often hidden needs driving them. My clients are not only looking for relief from their immediate struggles — they are also seeking insight into the roots of those struggles. They want a clearer understanding of what’s happening within them, why it’s happening, and how they can move forward. They are also looking for hope and ready to work and explore their concerns from different angles, so that they can better understand themselves and the world around them.

My approach is nonjudgmental, accepting, caring, and warm. I am a therapist who respects and understands the uniqueness of every person no matter what is their background.
I have a strong background in multicultural counseling and may be of good help for people from different cultural, ethnic, and religious backgrounds. I also work with relationship concerns and anxiety concerns. My experience includes working with sexual and gender topics of my clients, as well as grief and loss issues, life transitions, trauma, self-esteem, and self-exploration. Self-exploration and self-acceptance are one of the most important tasks we are working on with my clients in therapy. By working on this, we are building a better version of ourselves. During the treatment, I may use different modalities and tools, but no matter what tools or techniques may be used, I strongly believe that the relationship is a key priority in therapy. This is why I strongly focus on building trusting relationships with my clients during therapy. I also believe in the body-mind connection and strongly promote any physical activity for my clients during the treatment in most cases, because, from personal experience, I know the benefits of regular physical activity and how it may help with mental health issues.

In addition to the approaches I’ve already described, I bring a deep appreciation for the healing power of movement and dance. As a former professional dancer, I’ve seen firsthand how movement can help shift our emotional state, support self-expression, and promote healing.
Dance and movement can be powerful tools in working through anxiety, mild depression, burnout, self-esteem challenges, social anxiety, and even relationship issues. Movement can also be a gentle, effective way to process trauma, foster self-awareness, and build a stronger connection to ourselves and others.
When appropriate and if you’re open to it, I may incorporate elements of movement or dance therapy into our sessions. It’s always an invitation — never a requirement — and can be a creative, grounding way to support your mental and emotional well-being.
