How Therapy Helps You Feel Better
Talk therapy can look different for everyone, and that’s a good thing. Whether you’re looking for a space to process trauma, manage anxiety, or improve relationships, therapy can help you understand yourself more deeply and develop healthy tools for lasting change.
Therapy works. According to studies done by the American Psychiatric Association, talk therapy reduces symptoms quickly and long-term. Many people who underwent therapy for anxiety or depression found that they continued to improve even after completing therapy.1 Plus, people who had gone through therapy had a lower likelihood of relapse in symptoms compared to those on medication alone.2
Therapy can help you feel better in the long run by addressing underlying issues and providing coping mechanisms for dealing with difficult emotions and situations. It also provides a safe and nonjudgmental space to express yourself and receive support from a trained professional giving you unconditional positive regard. This can be especially helpful for people who may not have a strong support system in their personal lives.
“I think therapy can look a lot of different ways depending on the therapist and the client. For myself, I tend to be very client-directed and really allow my clients to talk about the issues that they’re bringing for that day that they want to talk about. And sometimes that might be a stressor or something that’s upsetting that happened in the past week, or it might be a or something that happened to them 25 years ago. It’s really around helping people learn how to manage those thoughts and feelings so they can function better in their everyday life.” – Kelly Kugel, MA, LMHC, NCC, Clinic Director | Mental Health Provider in MA
When Should You Seek Therapy?
You should seek therapy if you are experiencing persistent feelings of sadness, anxiety, or overwhelm that are starting to interfere with daily life. Therapy can also help if you notice changes in your sleep patterns, appetite, or energy levels, or if you feel stuck in a cycle of negative thoughts. Life events such as the loss of a loved one, the end of a relationship, or major transitions like a career change or relocation may also create a need for additional support.
Remember, seeking therapy is not only for times of crisis: It can also be a proactive way to build resilience, learn new strategies for self-care, and maintain emotional health. If you’re starting to notice some negative feelings or patterns, it’s a good idea to reach out for support before things escalate.
Types of Therapy Offered by Northeast Health Services
Northeast Health Services doesn’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. Every person has unique needs and goals, and the therapists in our clinics tailor therapy sessions and plans to fit these needs.
Our therapists use a variety of evidence-based methods, including:
- Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT): Helps you identify unhelpful thought patterns and change them
- Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT): Supports emotional regulation and distress tolerance
- Psychodynamic therapy: Explores past experiences and how they shape current behavior
- Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT): A type of CBT that focuses on mindfulness and acceptance of difficult thoughts and emotions
- Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT): A time-limited therapy that improves interpersonal relationships and communication patterns
- Internal family systems (IFS): An approach that looks at how different parts of a person’s personality interact with each other
- Eclectic therapy: Combines techniques from multiple therapeutic approaches to tailor treatment to the individual needs of the client
- Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT): Integrates mindfulness practices with cognitive therapy techniques to help individuals manage their thoughts and emotions
- Exposure and response prevention (ERP) therapy: Involves gradually exposing the individual to their fears or triggers in a safe and controlled environment, typically used for treating OCD
- Play therapy: Utilizes play and creative activities to help children express their thoughts and emotions, particularly useful for those who may have difficulty verbalizing their feelings
- Creative arts therapies: Utilizes art and creative expression as a means of communication and self-discovery
- Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy: Uses eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation to help people process traumatic memories and reduce distress associated with them
- Behavioral activation therapy: Focuses on encouraging individuals to engage in positive behaviors and activities that bring them joy, in order to combat symptoms of depression or anxiety
We aim to meet you wherever you are in your journey and provide the support you need. Our caring professionals are here to listen, make you feel safe, and help you feel empowered every step of the way.
Individual Therapy
Individual therapy offers a confidential space where you can talk openly with a licensed therapist. You’ll collaborate with your therapist to set goals, develop strategies, and build on your strengths at your own pace.
This one-on-one setting allows you to work through concerns such as:
- Depression, anxiety, or trauma
- Relationship stress or family dynamics
- Major life changes, such as divorce or job loss
- Grief and loss
- Strategies for stress management
- Parenting support
- Simply wanting to get to know yourself better
Some clients find clarity in just a few sessions; others continue long-term as their needs evolve. Either way, you and your therapist will work together to determine how long treatment will last.
Couples Therapy
Couples therapy focuses on improving communication and resolving conflicts within romantic relationships, including married couples, unmarried couples, same-sex couples, or any two partners who are seeking to improve their relationship. It can be beneficial for couples who are experiencing difficulties in their relationship, as well as those who simply want to strengthen their bond.
In couples therapy, both partners participate in the sessions together with a trained therapist, though the therapist may also talk to each partner separately at times. They work together to identify and address concerns such as communication problems, trust issues, financial disagreements, and trouble with sexual intimacy. The goal of this type of therapy is to help both partners understand each other’s perspectives and find healthier ways to communicate and connect.
Family Therapy
Family therapy focuses on improving communication and resolving conflicts within the family unit. It involves working with all family members to address issues such as strained relationships, divorce or separation, blended families, parenting concerns, and mental health challenges.
Family therapy can be especially beneficial for children and teenagers who may be struggling with behavioral or emotional issues. By involving the entire family, the therapist can address any underlying issues that may be contributing to the child’s struggles and work towards finding solutions together.
Family therapy can also help families navigate major life transitions such as divorce, loss of a loved one, or adjusting to a new family dynamic. A therapist can provide guidance and support during these challenging times, helping families maintain strong bonds and adapt to change.
Group Therapy
Group therapy gives you the chance to connect with others who understand what you’re going through. Led by an experienced therapist, our groups provide a supportive space to share, listen, and learn together.
Group therapy options vary across our clinics in Massachusetts, but our intake team is here to help. We’ll work with you to identify the offerings available in your area that best suit your needs. Many people find that group therapy helps reduce feelings of isolation while offering fresh perspectives and new coping skills. You’re never forced to share, and your comfort is always our priority.
What Therapy Looks Like (and What It Doesn’t)
Many people hesitate to start mental health counseling because they aren’t sure what to expect. They might worry about not knowing what to say or think that their problems “aren’t serious enough.” Others may be afraid of feeling judged by their therapist or think that they’ll face stigma.
Here’s the truth: therapy doesn’t follow a script. Some sessions are about exploring your past, others might focus on practical strategies for everyday stress, and some might even involve moments of laughter or silence. All of that is part of the process.
Your therapist is there to guide the process, not to “fix” you. You’ll work together as a team to figure out what helps. No matter what you’re going through, you’re likely to benefit from simply having someone who listens to you without judgment.
Short-Term vs. Long-Term Therapy
Therapy can be divided into two categories, short-term and long-term:
- Short-term therapy usually lasts anywhere from 8–16 sessions, with weekly or bi-weekly meetings. It typically focuses on a specific issue or problem and helps you develop strategies to deal with it more effectively. This type of therapy can be very effective for those looking for concrete solutions and support for a specific issue, like job loss, life transition, or other stressful life events.
- Long-term therapy is often more open-ended and can last several months or even years. The focus of this type of therapy is on gaining a deeper understanding of yourself and your patterns, as well as addressing any underlying issues that may be contributing to your current struggles. This can provide more sustainable and long-lasting changes in your life.
There is no right or wrong approach to choosing between short-term and long-term therapy. Both options have benefits and can be effective for different individuals and situations. Northeast Health Services therapists will help you determine the best approach for your case, and you don’t have to figure it out alone.
“I think short-term therapy works well when it’s a new stressor that’s pretty immediately resolved in someone’s life and isn’t going to turn into a long-term issue, like an adjustment in life or a new life stage that they’re facing. Usually when we see people with more chronic concerns or we see clients with a lot of trauma from a long time ago, that’s usually more long-term work and it should really be a conversation and a process for the therapist and the client together to figure out what that looks like.” – Kelly Kugel, MA, LMHC, NCC, Clinic Director | Mental Health Provider in MA
Cost & Insurance Concerns
Many people worry that therapy will be expensive, especially for long-term needs. However, we make it our mission to provide the most affordable care possible. Our services are in-network with almost all major insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid.
You can talk to our intake specialists to learn more about what your copay will be before you start therapy, so there won’t be any surprises.
Options for In-Person & Telehealth Therapy Sessions
Some people prefer in-person therapy to really feel that bond and connection by being in the same room as their therapist. Others find that they prefer the convenience of telehealth sessions that they can do from home, especially if they live further away from a clinic. Our therapists offer both depending on their clients’ needs.
“Most therapists in my office offer a hybrid combination of in-person and telehealth. It’s possible that you’ll see your therapist in-person most of the time, but then have times when you don’t have a babysitter or need to do a session in your car over your lunch break. I have other clients who are telehealth most of the time. Maybe they live further away but they want that in-person connection every once in a while. Our clinics are able to manage both with ease.” – Kelly Kugel, MA, LMHC, NCC, Clinic Director | Mental Health Provider in MA
