Melissa Newbury, CMHC Intern

Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor Intern

Welcome! My ideal client may be seeking therapy services for a variety of reasons. Perhaps it’s a life transition, changes in mood or interest in activities, feelings of anxiousness or sleep disturbances. They may be seeking insight and support as they explore their identity, or experiencing burnout at work or in the academic setting, or seeking education following a new diagnosis. Others may have experienced loss or grief, a traumatic experience, are seeking a safe space to discuss a sensitive subject or just haven’t felt like themselves lately. Whatever the reason, you’ll be welcomed into a warm, caring, empathetic and affirming space where you’re encouraged to be your authentic self without judgment, and together we can work to tailor your therapy experience to your specific needs and I’ll be walking alongside you as you work towards your goals.

I utilize a variety of evidence-based therapy techniques such as CBT, or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, DBT, or Dialectical Behavior Therapy as well as TF-CBT, or Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I have specialized training and experience in trauma-informed counseling and have a special interest in working with first responders, healthcare workers, veterans and military families. My approach is person-centered and strengths-based, and together we can explore your unique strengths and interests, using mindfulness and calming techniques and coping strategies as part of your experience. I also infuse creative techniques such as art, music (my favorite!), crafting, exercise or other creative activities that may interest you alongside evidence-based techniques to truly tailor your therapy experience to your interests with a mindfulness approach. Through my ongoing education and training, I’m always seeking out opportunities to learn and grow as a clinician and offer unique tools and techniques to my clients.

I’m currently in my final year of graduate school working towards my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with a concentration in Trauma-Informed Care. I have experience working in both the inpatient hospital setting as well as outpatient, and prior to entering this field I’ve also worked in IT, healthcare administration and have even worked in a tattoo studio, which may be evident when you meet me! I believe in meeting each client where they’re at, working together to find what works best for them, and encouraging them to be their authentic self. As a 40-something neurodivergent and neuro-affirming individual, my past work and lived experience offers a unique empathetic approach on many levels in my therapy practice. I invite you to reach out if you feel that I’m the right clinician to walk alongside you and support you through your therapy journey.

As a self-proclaimed nerd, when I’m not at work or studying, my favorite activities include reading, crocheting, riding my motorcycle, adding to my vast tattoo collection, watching the Bruins, exploring walking and hiking trails, horror movies, all things relating to the ’80’sand spending time with my adult children.
